PLAY WHAT YOU PRACTICE
You, like many other guitar students, start out learning beginner things. You practice a lot and follow videos or tablature, yet you don’t feel like you’re progressing musically or technically. Truly you are not at fault. If you’re practicing to become and expert at beginner exercises you’re going to end up being a beginner forever. To play like an expert guitarist you have to do what the experts do!
There’s different approaches to learning and playing music on the guitar that experts and beginners do. Beginners seek quick, gimmicky, painless ways to succeed at the guitar. That manifests as picking things that they can already do, like play Happy Birthday or Yankee Doodle. Or trying to learn guitar from videos with three camera angles, special effects, and sonic note verification just learn how to play a G chord. Or they just learn guitar as they learn songs that they love; that method worked for Hendrix so more power to you.
I understand why people would learn guitar this way. Guitar is a labyrinth to understand and make music on. There’s different shapes chords and scales. The strings bend and can be struck 10 different ways. There’s duplicate notes on each of the strings. Then you still have to learn how the shapes relate to music theory in terms of harmony. So the easier and softer way is let’s just learn “Master of Puppets” and “Wonderwall” that’ll get the job done.
It’s depressing to think about that there must be some secret or natural gift from the guitar gods that let other people understand and play on the guitar so well. There’s no secret, but there is a method.
Imagine understanding all the shapes, concepts, and mechanics of the guitar as well as your favorite guitar players.
Envision being able to create your own riffs and solos effortlessly using simple techniques that experts use.
Feel the confidence within that any song you want to play you would be prepared. You would be able to recognize guitar patterns that make learning the songs twice as fast and easy.
Obtain the ability to synergize and jam with anyone, in any style.
I’ve taught hundreds of guitar lessons over the last 7 years and not a single student came in and said “ I want to be a guitar practicer”. They wanted to be a guitar player. We both know they need to practice and learn the essential principles of the guitar. Scales, chords, arpeggios, harmony, techniques, note names, etc. Yet I and many experts learned these things by playing. So I developed the No Bars Held Held Course so that you would play and create with the essentials using the consistent structure of the 12 Bar blues.
I believe this knowledge will have your imagination flourish with “No Bars Held”.
How you approach the 12 bar blues is how you approach life.

Why this was created?
I sought to give students a consistent predictable framework that students can bend and stretch to their personality too. I wanted to make what I know about the guitar affordable and interactive for the least well of people. Professional Guitar Lessons are $150-400 per month so $1900-$5000 per year; mostly because teachers/students have limited time spots they can teach with %100 dedication to your needs and custom lesson plans. I wanted to help you save time, money, and give you greater flexibility and support using technology. .
The 12 Bar Blues is the most dense, universal, and useful chord progression to learn the guitar and MOST IMPORTANTLY MUSIC! The blues is the true originator of metal. Some may argue classical, but metal is far too rhythmically dense and texturally spicy to have ever sounded good in a cathedral during the classical period.
Who is this for?
This program is for people looking for a map to guitar and musical mastery. People who want to build a solid foundation before they start designing the mural on the ceiling. People that want a fun way to learn chords and how they work together to create atmospheres. Those who want better music awareness in their harmony and rhythm. Those who want a framework to create their own ideas with. People who want to jam with other people. People on a budget that can’t afford private guitar lessons and need more guidance than Youtube, Jamplay, Fender play, Yousician.
I believe this course will help you make more music than excuses because all the knowledge is at your finger tips and available 24/7.
I believe this course will help you become a fan of yourself because you will gain insight into what drives you as a musician. What chords, tempos, harmonies move you and where and how you like to play on the guitar.
I am Grant Sherrod and I’m 25 years old. I have played the guitar for 16 years and have taught the guitar for 6 years to dozens of students of various ages, levels, genres, personalities, and guitars. When I learned guitar it wasn’t until I learned the 12 Bar Blues that everything started to make sense. Questions like how do chords fit into scales, how do I know which notes to play, how do harmonies and intervals work, how do I make my own songs all made sense. I also found most of my favorite rock, metal, and blues songs used the 12 Bar in their songs too. Now I find it harder not to think of new ideas!
I’ve taught guitar in home, at the Garage Band Academy, The Bay Area Academy of Music, and at Guitar Center. Now I teach guitar online.
My motivation/learning type is “Give me a map and let me explore” and I like to teach students that way too. I get most excited at creating better ways of achieving goals and creating interactive experiences; which is why I studied Philosophy and Kinesiology.
I have two main goals in my life I’d like to be remembered for “I helped people make more music than excuses” and “I helped people become fans of themselves”. This guitar program embodies both of these principles.
My Guitar Journey
I was 9 years old and went to my grandmas house to show her I can play “Smoke on the Water” on my mini toy guitar. She switched it with her real guitar, showed me three chords, and then I could play: Oh Susana, Coming Around the Mountain, and Down in the Valley. I was amazed that learning three or four chords could help me play so many songs! Promptly, I attained an electric guitar which I learned techniques, chords, and scales from songs to experiment and create as well. I Enrolled in private lessons where my teacher showed me: the pentatonic scales across the fretboard, the power chords, and the 12 Bar Blues Progression. THAT WAS THE MOMENT WHEN GUITAR AND MUSIC BECAME WIDE OPEN.
When I was 12 and went to play in bands everyone was amazed I could write my own riffs and solos so well because I knew these principles. I just kept learning new techniques, based on the genre I was interested in, and my playing got better and better. I always had inspiration because I always could find different melodies or riffs using combinations of those essential principles.
Today, 25, I create music on the guitar and help people create on the guitar every single day. I’ve been in blues, rock, hardcore, reggae, and metal bands. At this point all I have to do is set my intention for what I want to learn and I know I can do it. That is the freedom I want all my students and guitar players to have.
I’ve taught hundreds of guitar lessons over the last 7 years and not a single student came in and said “ I want to be a guitar practicer”. We both know they need to practice and learn the essential principles of the guitar. Scales, chords, arpeggios, harmony, techniques, note names, etc. Yet I and many experts learned these things by playing.
